Welsh athletics is sad to learn of the death at the age of 86 of the former Welsh 440 yards champion John Ernest Collins. He was a fine sprinter winning county championships and the Welsh 440 yards title as a member of Port Talbot YMCA in 1952 in a time of 51.7
He was better known though as a Welsh rugby international winger, winning 10 caps in the 1950s. He played for Aberavon RFC. He was born in Aberavon on January 16, 1931. He scored a try on his international debut that helped defeat the Australian tourists in Cardiff. It was the only try by Wales in the 9-3 victory.
