Wales's Heather Lewis (Pembrokeshire Harriers) was the outstanding performance from a GB perspective at the IAAF World Race Walk Cup held in Saransk, Russia on 12 & 13 May.

Going into the Junior Womens 10km Lewis, who is coached by Martin Bell, was ranked 25th of the 50 starters, and finished a highly creditable 23rd. Although her clocking of 50:38 was almost 50 seconds slower than her pb, most of the girls around her were even slower than their bests as the 29 degree heat sapped the strength and energy from all of the fields.

Although initially disappointed not to improve her pb further, she was happy to finish close to girls with pbs over a minute faster than hers and Heather now knows that she is capable of breaking 49 minutes for the distance in the right conditions.
