Two stalwarts of Welsh Athletics were recognised during the Welsh Indoor Championships last weekend. Derek Williams was presented with a Welsh Athletics Award of Honour, while Jason Clifton received a Meritorious Award.
A member of Abertillery Achilles in his youth, Williams later joined Dinas Powys Runners and Les Croupiers, where he assumed the position of Secretary for more than 20 years.
Derek represented the club at county and regional level, covering several positions such as License Officer and Treasurer in addition to being cross country team manager at both levels.
He also contributed to the sport as Secretary for Welsh Vets, as a representative on the board of the AAW, and as a member of the Road Running Committee for AAW and Welsh Athletics.
He is one of the few officials to have reached level 5 and is a fixture at the most important endurance events in the Principality, in addition to covering several roles at many schools events and cross country and road running events around Wales.
Similarly, Clifton joined Cwmbran Harriers as an athlete and went on to be an official for the club and Welsh Athletics. His experience brought him to be selected to judge in UKA matches. He is now is chairman of the Club and a firm presence at most Welsh Athletics track and field events.
Welsh Athletics would like to thank both Derek and Jason for their long standing involvement with athletics in Wales and congratulate them for their awards.
