On a glorious day down Cardiff Bay, 11,000 runners finished the 2010 Cardiff Half Marathon. As expected, the Kenyans went to the fore from the gun and were never matched by the rest of the field. Edwin Kipkorir and Edwin Kipyego were neck and neck until the last half a mile when Kipkorir pulled away to win by 4 seconds in 62:08.
The battle for 3rd place went to the line and saw a Welshman involved. With 800m to go, Eluid Cheptei led 2009 silver medallist Michael Johnson by around 70m. Michael dug deep and finished an agonising 1 second off the podium but walked away with 4th place and another Welsh title to add to the 5k and 10k ones won this season.
Behind Michael, Rob Samuel was having a good run for 2nd in the Welsh Championships, an excellent result considering he has been injured and missed a few weeks training recently. Richie Gardiner was philosophical about his performance. He was 3rd in the Welsh Championships in a reasonable time and now has to decide whether to run the Snowdon Marathon in 2 weeks' time.
The women's race saw another Kenyan 1-2-3, although Ann-Marie Hutchison won the Welsh title to add to the Welsh Marathon title won earlier in the year. She had 4 minutes to spare over 2nd-placed Ann Thomas of Trots, who had an excellent race to take the master 40 title as well. Clare Phillips, never far from the womens medals, finished 3rd.
Jamie Baulch ran a faster than expected 1:45 and felt good after the race. The former 400m Welsh hero can now look onwards to the London Marathon!
