WELSH ATHLETICS MOUNTAIN RUNNING CHAMPIONSHIPS
RACE 3 Ras Yr Aran REPORT
SATURDAY 9th JULY 2011
This year the race was a counter in the British as well as the Welsh Championships and attracted a strong field from all over the UK. The weather was good - dry, sunny intervals, cool breeze and the summit was clear. Underfoot conditions were boggy in places after the heavy rain of the previous day. The race was won by Morgan Donnelly of Borrowdale in a record time of 1.22.55. The ladies race was won by Philippa Maddams of Keswick also in a new record time of 1.39.08.
Mercia’s Welsh International and reigning British Champion Tim Davies made a bold effort to make up ground on Donnelly on the descent having reached the summit over two minutes behind in 3rd place but Donnelly was in no mood to relinquish his lead, though Tim did pass Rob Jebb on the way down to finish 2nd in a time of 1:24:05 with Jebb 3rd in 1:24:34 and Tim’s brother Andy 4th in 1:24:57. Eryri’s Richard Roberts was the next Welsh finisher in 11th place in a time of 1:26:07 with 17th Serpentine’s Richard Phillips 1:29:44 and 19th Ifan Richards 1:29:53. The first Welsh female finisher was Eryri’s Andrea Rowlands in 78th place overall (6th Female) in a time of 1:49:28.
With one race to go in the Welsh Championships (Pedol Peris Short Race 3rd Sept) Richard Philips and Andrea Rowlands lead the way in the respective Male and Female categories.
