The Welsh Schools’ Athletics Association has released details of its 2011 National cross-country championships, which will be held at Brecon on Wednesday, March 16th.
Chairman Kath Elias is delighted to report that there has been some progress in filling in some of the missing information on the early championships.
“I would like to pay a special thanks to Mrs Ann Saxena, the former Ann Disley’, said Mrs Elias. ‘Our results from 1968 to 1972 are very slim, which is very sad considering that the first girls events were held in 1970, and the middle boys was also added in that year.’
‘We are grateful for Ann coming forward to say that Katerina Blackwell won the first senior championship in 1970, with Ann second, and then in the following year their positions were reversed.’
‘That is a significant step forward, but we still have a long way to go. We have issued a revised, downloadable file listing the information we have for 1961 to 1974 and for 1975 to 1996, and have added to that a third section covering 1997 to 2010.’
‘We would still welcome help from anyone who has memories of or who competed in the period 1961 to 1972, and we would like to hear from anyone who competed in the 1982 championships because we only have very limited results.’
‘Our eight district associations are currently completing the qualifying competitions to finalise their teams for March 16th. For athletes selected for those teams, we also release downloadable information about event timings and competition rules, and a copy of the course map.’
Anyone with information about the championships from 1961 to 1972 or for 1982 is asked to contact Pete Morris at email@example.com.
