Commonwealth Games - Day 6 Preview

Friday 13th April

Friday’s sessions see seven welsh athletes take to the track and field inside the Carrara Stadium. The Gold Coast is currently 9 hours ahead of the United Kingdom, and all times listed below are the times that athletes will be in action on UK Time.

Morning Session

02:35 a.m – Men’s 1,500m Heats

Cardiff AAC duo Tom Marshall and Rowan Axe will both make their Commonwealth Games debuts on Friday morning as they look to gain qualification from their respective 1,500m heats. Both athletes head into Friday’s heats after running season’s best times (Tom running 3:44 and Rowan running 3:48) within the last fortnight on Australia’s Sunshine Coast.

Evening Session

10:25 a.m – Women’s Pole Vault Final

Commonwealth Games silver medallist from Glasgow 2014, Sally Peake (Birchfield Harriers) will again be looking to challenge for a podium position as she competes in the Pole Vault Final on Friday. Sally notched a season’s best effort of 4.30m last weekend at the International Invitation Meet at Sippy Downs, which indicates she’s rounding into form at the right time for the Games.

10:30 a.m – Men’s 3,000m Steeplechase Final

Wales will have two representatives in the 3,000m Steeplechase Final in Ieuan Thomas (Cardiff AAC) and Jon Hopkins (Swansea Harriers). Both athletes have improved significantly over the past 18 months in the steeplechase events and will be looking for strong performances in their debut Commonwealth Games Final.

10:52 a.m – Men’s T47 100m Final

Morgan Jones (DSW Para Academy) will make his Commonwealth Games debut in the T47 100m on Friday. Morgan recently ran a personal best time of 11.73 at the Dubai International Open Athletics Meeting and will be hopeful of replicating that form in Friday’s T47 100m Final.
