Commonwealth Games Day 1 Preview

Sunday 8th April

The athletics action gets underway on Sunday morning as the first of our athletes take to the roads and track at the Carrara Stadium. The Gold Coast is currently 9 hours ahead of the United Kingdom, and all times listed below are the times that athletes will be in action on UK Time.

Morning Session

12:15 a.m – Women’s 20km Walk Final

Bethan Davies (Cardiff AAC) and Heather Lewis (Pembrokeshire) will kick off the action in the Women’s 20km Race Walk Final on Sunday morning. Bethan recently set a personal best time of 1:31:53 over the 20km distance and appears to be in fine form heading into the competition, whilst Heather also set a huge personal best of 1:36:14 in the same race back in March and will be hoping for another strong performance on the Gold Coast.

Afternoon Session

05:00 a.m – Men’s Hammer Throw Final

Welsh record holder Osian Jones (Liverpool Harriers) will look to carry his excellent recent form into the Men’s Hammer Throw Final. Jones broke his own national record just two weeks ago, when he threw a huge personal best of 71.62m at the Queensland International Track Classic.

06:18 a.m – Women’s T38 Long Jump Final

Olivia Breen will compete in the Women’s T38 Long Jump Final as she looks better her 4th place at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Breen jumped to an indoor personal best of 4.85m back in February and will look to replicate a similar performance once more at the Carrara Stadium.
