Thirteen athletes are being supported by Welsh Athletics to compete at two international meetings this weekend, as they look to secure European Championships Qualifying Standards and Lifetime Best performances against high quality international competition. Eight welsh athletes will be supported to travel to the Atletica Geneve meeting in Geneva, Switzerland on Saturday evening, whilst five athletes will be supported to travel to the Gouden Spike meeting in Leiden, Holland – also taking place on Saturday evening.
Atletica Geneve – Geneva, Switzerland
Sprint duo Sam Gordon (Cardiff AAC) and Mica Moore (Birchfield Harriers) will look to build on their promising early season form as they compete in the 100m. Sam will be back in action for the first time since his 2nd placed finish at the Loughborough International on the 20th May, whilst Mica will compete for the second weekend in a row after running 11.82 at the UK Women’s League Premier Division last weekend in Eton. Owen Smith (Cardiff AAC) and Laura Maddox (Swansea Harriers) have also performed strongly so far this season, and both athletes will be chasing lifetime best clockings again in the 400m on Saturday evening.
The men’s 1,500m will see Jonny Tobin (Swansea Harriers) and Cardiff AAC junior James Vincent take to the track in the hope of notching more quick times, whilst Emily Thomas (Swansea Harriers) will compete in the Long Jump hoping to better her lifetime best of 5.80m set in Swansea back in April. Welsh Junior Record holder in the Hammer Throw, Amber Simpson (Deeside AAC) will again be seeking a strong set of throws after fine performances at the Loughborough International and Encontro Internacional throws meeting in Almada last weekend.
Gouden Spike – Leiden, Holland
Gold Coast duo Jonathan Hopkins (Swansea Harriers) and Ieuan Thomas (Cardiff AAC) will both race in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase with the pair looking to dip under the European Championships Qualifying Standard of 8:32. Jonny recently clocked a lifetime best and European Qualifying Standard of 8:30 in Oordegem, whilst Ieuan will be seeking to shave another 2 seconds off his current lifetime best of 8:33.
In the men’s 200m, Cardiff’s Kristian Jones will be looking to build on his wind assisted 20.93 at Lee Valley on Wednesday evening, whilst junior athlete Michael Parry (Colwyn Bay) will look to make the most of the high calibre competition in the men’s 800m. Stevie Stockton (Leeds City) will race the 10,000m with the hope of knocking yet more time off her lifetime best of 32:35 set at Highgate a few weeks ago.
