The Great City Games

The annual Great City Games were held on Saturday with some of the Worlds best Athletics stars taking to the streets of Gateshead.

Melissa Courtney (Rob Denmark) produced a superb performance to win the Women’s Road Mile with a new personal best of 4:33.83. The Shaftesbury Barnet Runner put in a impressive sprint in the final straight to blow away her competitors. It’s been a good year for Melissa who has ran a personal best of 8:43.72 for 3000m in Watford last Wednesday.  She has also ran personal bests in the 800m (2:04.03), 1500m (4:05.82), Mile (4:23.15) and 5000m (15:28.95) this season too.

The Great North Run

Runners of all abilities returned to the streets of Newcastle South-Shields on Sunday morning to take on the 13.1 mile Great North Run Course. The Elite Men’s and Women’s fields were packed with World-Class runners and there were two Welsh athletes in action.

Dewi Griffiths (Kevin Evans) continued his fine form by finishing in 7th place in a strong Men’s elite race packed full of recent Olympic medallists. The recent Cardiff 10k winner also finished ahead of former World 1500m Champion Bernard Lagat.  The Swansea Harrier moved up 7th on the Welsh all-time Half Marathon rankings after clocking a new personal best of 62:53. Dewi’s had an impressive season after setting personal bests in the 3000m (7:55.65), 5000m (13:33.60), 10,000m (28:16.07) and the Half Marathon as of yesterday. The West Wales runner has also achieved the Commonwealth A Standard in the 10,000m and the B Standard for the 5000m.

Caryl Jones put in a strong performance to finish 9th in the Elite Women’s race which was stacked with Olympic Champions and Medallists. The Swansea Harrier clocked a seasons best of 74:22 to finish 4th out of the British runners too. Caryl has had a solid summer after finishing 3rd at the Swansea Half Marathon in June.

Lake Vyrwny Half Marathon

The annual Lake Vyrwny Half Marathon took place on Sunday with over 1300 runners embarking on the 13.1 mile course around the lake. The race was won by Jonny Mellor (Steve Vernon) of Liverpool Harriers in a time of 64:57.

S.E.W.L Les Davies Club Challenge

The annual Les Davies Club Challenge took place on Saturday with 8 Welsh Clubs in contention. It was Rhymney Valley who were victorious by winning the overall team competition in Hereford.
