Weekend Round-Up - 17th/18th June

Gouden Spike, Holland

Wales’ top male steeplechasers once again posted strong performances, as Ieuan Thomas (Cardiff AAC) battled to second in yet another A standard for the Gold Coast with a time of 8:34.93, with Jonathan Hopkins (Swansea Harriers) right behind in 3rd in a time of 8:36.93. In the 400m Hurdles, Caryl Granville (Swansea Harriers) equalled her seasons best with a time of 57.62 as she edges closer to the standard required for consideration for the Gold Coast. In the men’s 10,000m, the ever consistent Dewi Griffiths (Swansea Harriers) continued his fine summer, clocking his second fastest time of 28:24.71 for 7th in a very competitive field.

BMC Gold Standard Meet, Watford

Tom Marshall & Rowan Axe (both Cardiff AAC) produced a stunning breakthrough performances, to claim a number of scalps (including Olympic 5th placer Andy Butchart), and smash the A standard for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Their times in the 1500m of 3:37.62 & 3:38.12 takes them to 3rd and 5th in the Welsh all time lists. Both men showed glimpses of what was to come as they performed so impressively in the previous week's Welsh Championships, with Rowan claiming a comfortable victory in the 1500m and Tom finishing a close second in an impressive 800m field. In the women’s 800m, Melissa Courtney, who celebrated claiming the World 1500m Qualifying mark when running a pb of 4:06.00 the previous weekend, ran a season’s best over 800m clocking a time of 2:06.00 for second.
