Welsh Team in Action at Manchester International

A Strong Welsh Team made the trip up to Northern England yesterday for the annual Manchester International annual track & field fixture. The Welsh Team competed against teams from Denmark, Great Britain Juniors, British Athletics League & UK women’s league, Scotland and a Northern Irish & Ulster team. It was a solid showing from the athletes with Wales finishing 5th out of 7 overall. There were a few stand-out performances on the evening with 4 Welsh athletes winning their events which included a complete domination of the Race Walk events.

Guy Thomas (Martin Rush) of Tonbridge AC took the win in the men’s 3000m race walk with a time of 12:20.49, this was a dominant display from Guy who currently tops the Welsh Rankings for this event.

Heather Lewis (Martin Bell) of Pembrokeshire battled it out to the finish line with the English athlete, it was a close finish but Heather took the win with a time of 13:15.52.

Caryl Granville (Darrell Maynard) of Swansea Harriers produced two impressive performances on the evening, firstly to win the women’s 400m Hurdles in a time of 57.91. She then also finished 2nd and set a new personal best of 13.46 in the women’s 100m Hurdles. It’s been a good year for the Swansea Harrier who currently has 4 Commonwealth ‘B’ Standards to her name.

It was a close finish in the men’s 3000m steeplechase but Swansea Harrier Jonathan Hopkins edged out his competitors to win in a time of 8:49.25. It’s been a solid season for the Swansea athlete who currently has 1 Commonwealth ‘A’ standard to his name and two ‘B’ standards too.

Tom Williams (Thomas Meyer) of Barry & Vale Harriers finished in 3rd in the men’s 200m, it was a close finish for Williams who clocked a time of 21.07.

Swansea Harrier Jonatan Tobin (Kevin Tobin) set a new personal best to finish 3rd in the men’s Mile race, the Swansea athlete clocked a time of 4:18.61.

Decathlete Ben Gregory (Aston Moore) finished 5th in the men’s 110m hurdles with a new personal best, the Birchfield harriers recorded a time of 14.40.

The Welsh relay teams put in strong performances on the evening with the men’s 4x100m team finishing 2nd with a  time of 40.07. The Welsh women’s 4x400m relay team ran a time of 3:44.40 to finish 3rd overall.

Adele Nicoll (Vladimir Zinchenko) finished 3rd in the women’s Shotput, the Birchfield Harrier threw a distance of 15.46 metres.

Olympian Brett Morse was also in action on the evening, the Cardiff AAC athlete threw 59.56 metres in the men’s to finish 2nd overall.

James Tomlinson (Paul Jensen) who is only recently just back from the Commonwealth Youth Games was in action in Manchester. The Pembrokeshire Harrier set a new personal best for the Under 20 1.75k Discus.
