Ahead of the Men’s T47 100m Final on Friday morning, we caught up with Morgan Jones (DSW Para Academy) about his earliest memories of sprinting and his experience over in Australia so far.
WA: When did you first get involved with sprinting and what are your earliest memories of running the 100m?
MJ: "I first competed in sprinting when I was asked by my university (Cardiff Metropolitan) if I would consider running in the ambulant para 100m race at the British Universities (BUCS) Outdoor Championships. At the time I was a long jumper so I had been training to improve my speed, but I was surprised that I'd been asked to compete in a sprint event at BUCS! Since then there's been a gradual shift away from long jump to focusing entirely on sprinting."
WA: We know that you’re coached and guided by Christian Malcolm, how inspirational has it been having such an iconic figure in athletics helping your career?
MJ: "Having Christian to guide me has been so important. He’s had such a long, successful career and as a training group we are very lucky to be able to learn from him. Christian has used his experience to get us in to the best shape of our lives and to give us the belief that we can achieve anything that we set our minds to. I have been lucky enough to develop a great friendship with Christian off the track as well, and he has given me the opportunity to work with his own academy which has been a fantastic learning experience!"
WA: How has your experience been so far over in Australia?
MJ: "Australia has been amazing so far! The preparation camp on the Sunshine Coast was great. I have been able to focus in on getting ready for the race and I’ve also been able to enjoy some downtime with my training group."
WA: What does it mean to be able to put on that Welsh vest and represent your country at the highest level?
MJ: "To put on the Welsh vest at a Commonwealth Games is not something that many para-athletes have the opportunity to do. I am immensely proud of being here. This is the opportunity of a lifetime and I am extremely excited to race with the Welsh Dragon on my chest."
