SCHOOLS INTERNATIONAL ATHLETIC BOARD (SIAB) CROSS COUNTRY 2024 -DUBLIN, MARCH 23

A 40-strong Welsh team returned with a four-medal haul from the SIAB Schools International Cross Country event held at the Sport Ireland Campus in the suburbs of Dublin on Saturday.

Taking on the best young athletes from England, Ireland and Scotland, Libby Hale (Afan Nedd Tawe) led the way in the individual standings.

The Welsh school's under-15 champion produced an excellent performance in the intermediate girls race where she led going into the final 200m.

However, she was overhauled before the line as she claimed bronze in 14:14, finishing narrowly behind English duo Olivia Forrest and Shakira King.

Hale’s performance helped Wales earn the team bronze medal behind England and Ireland.

She was joined on the podium by team-mates Millie Gold (Cardiff and Vale), Abigail Doherty (North East Wales), Madisson Hughes (Powys), Holly Humphreys (Afan Nedd Tawe), Millie Pierce (Afan Nedd Tawe), Sioned John (Cardiff and the Vale) and Amelia Williams (Dyfed).

Wales also claimed team bronze medals in the junior girls and junior boys races.

The junior girls event saw the Welsh team once again finish third behind England and Ireland.

Bryony Boyce (Cardiff and the Vale) led the way in 12th place in 11:22. Also receiving team medals were Nansi Griffiths (Dyfed), Martha Bown (Eryri), Heather Watson (North East Wales), Sali Owen (Dyfed), Eleanor Wright-Nicholas (Glamorgan Valleys), Lily Morgan (Dyfed) and Poppy Turton (South East Wales).

In the junior boys race, Wales finished third behind England and Scotland.

Wales’ top finisher was Tom Garrod (South East Wales), who finished ninth in 13:45. His fellow Welsh team bronze medallists were Osian Parry (Eryri), Lewis Davies (North East Wales), Finlay Burns (Cardiff and the Vale), Zac Campbell (North East Wales), Alfie Bartley-Rose (North East Wales), Lucas Howard Machado (Cardiff and the Vale), and Osian Rowe (Cardiff and the Vale).

NANT YR ARIAN SILVER TRAIL HALF MARATHON AND 10K – ABERYSTWYTH, MARCH 24

The scenic Nant Yr Arian Silver Trail Half Marathon was held in mid Wales at the weekend.

The men’s race was won by Dylan Lewis in 1:38.32. He was followed home by Miha Banzea in 1:45.25 and Gareth Wyn (Aberystwyth) in 1:45.38.

First across the line in the women’s race was Becky Atkinson (Sarn Helen), who clocked 1:53.52, ahead of Lynwen Huxtable (Aberystwyth AC) in 2:05.34 and Sophie Cave (Cerist) in 2:10.01.

The men’s 10k was won by Cameron Jones in 48:43, followed by Nick Mackay in 53:20 and Richard Brown in 54:38.

Winner of the women’s 10K was Caryl Davies in 57:30, ahead of Angharad Eburn in 59:02 and Laura Guillame in 59:48.

SRI CHINMOY 100K/50K ULTRA RACES – PERTH, MARCH 24

The evergreen Andy Davies (Stockport Harriers) set a new Welsh record in the 50K race, which incorporated the British Championship, at North Inches Park in Perth on Sunday.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games marathoner and veteran Great Britain multi-distance international finished second in a new Welsh best of 2:48.33.

Davies crossed the line narrowly behind Ronnie Richmond (Bideford AAC), who claimed gold in a new UK record of 2:48.25.

Welsh athlete Tony Golabek (Inverness Harriers) also took part in the 50k race and finished 6th in a time of 3.24.11.

In the 100K Anglo Celtic Plate, Jen Coleman (Les Croupiers) finished fifth in the women’s race in a new personal best of 8:12.29.

The men’s 100K race saw Gareth Pritchard (Vegan Runners) claim a top 20 finish and a new personal best, crossing the line in 7:33.03 for 17th place. Henry Drake (Amman Valley) also achieved a new personal best time of 7.52.51.

Unfortunately, Sam Richards after a promising start, suffered from tight hamstrings but still managed to finish in a time of 9.40.32 while Ieuan Griffiths was forced to withdraw after 29 laps (69kms) 6.17.51 due to a knee injury.

CHESHIRE ELITE 10K – PULFORD, MARCH 24

A number of Welsh athletes claimed top 10 finishes at the Cheshire Elite 10K, which is run over one of fastest routes in the UK.

The men’s race was won by Birchfield Harrier Omar Ahmed in 29:29 ahead of two Pontypridd Roadents – England international Jake Smith, who clocked 29.44 and James Heneghan who claimed his spot on the podium with 30.05.

The next Welsh athlete home was Osian Perrin (Menai Track and Field), who crossed the line in 30:33 for fifth place. Matt Willis (Wrexham AC) was eighth in 30:45, while Rhodri Owen (Meirionnydd Running Club) was tenth in 30:51.

The women’s race was won by England and Great Britain international Verity Ockenden (Swansea Harriers) in 32:14, while Welsh international Anna Bracegirdle (Salford Harriers) was fifth in 33:51.

WARSAW HALF MARATHON – MARCH 24

Ciaran Lewis (Les Croupiers) was the top British finisher in the men’s field at the Warsaw Half Marathon in Poland on Sunday.

Lewis finished 10th in a new personal best time of 65:17 in the race which was won by Belgium’s Dorian Boulvin, who broke the tape in 61:58.

In the women’s race Alaw Evans (Les Croupiers) was also the first Brit home finishing11th in a time of 75:00, which was also a new PB.

WELSHPOOL 10K – MARCH 24

Hannah Thomas (Maldwyn Harriers) won the women’s race at the Welshpool 10K in 42:51 on Sunday, ahead of Siwan Elenid (Meirionnydd), who clocked 44:16 and Nan Thomas, who was third in 44:35.

The men’s race was won by Joe Robson in 35:01 ahead of Johan Aufdenkamp in 35:15, while Thomas Blunt was third in 35:34.
