The Welsh Schools’ team have 27 members from 22 different schools with all eight district associations having a representative in the first ever HSBC Celtic Schools’ Indoor International on Sunday 3rd February.
The team will be led by experienced Wrexham AC duo Hannah Thomas (St Jospeh’s) and Tom Cusworth (Maelor Penley). Hannah will compete in the 60m, high jump and long jump while Tom will be in both sprints as well as the relay.
Fellow North Walian Megan Rogers (Maelor Penley), who is having an outstanding winter season, will have to complete her three individual events in just 40-minutes with the long jump, 60m hurdles and 200m coming in quick succession.
The Maelor Penley threesome is completed by new sprint starlet Chloe Jones. She produced a fast 200m at the recent Welsh Indoor Championships in the under 15 final and could give the experienced Irish and Scottish sprinters a shock in the one lap event.
South East Schools, have a strong representation in the team with two Under 15 middle distance stars making the team a year young. Daniel Chesworth (Duffryn) and Elliott Hardee (Bettws) have battled hard against each other both indoors and outdoors but on this occasion Daniel will line up in the 800m while Elliott will be in the 1500m.
.
However the youngest member of the team is 13-year old Lauren Bell (Bro Gwaun). The Fishguard based athlete produced the fastest 800m in two age groups at the Welsh Championships and will have the ideal opportunity on her international debut to dip under the 2:20secs mark for the first time in the 800m.
Dyfed provide the field event power as Welsh medium school Bro Myrddin in Carmarthen provide both shot putters in Rheon James and Jonathan Gardiner with fellow Dyfed athlete Sadie Flint (Glanymor)making it three out of four throwers from the county.
First event at the National Indoor Athletics Centre at the UWIC campus in Cyncoed, Cardiff is at 10.00am and is held in conjunction with the Under 20 and Senior Celtic Cup matches.
