Cross Country Teams selected

Having gained his fourth consecutive Schools’ cross-country title, Dewi Griffiths (Tregib) is rewarded with the captaincy of the boy’s team to take on Irish Schools’, Welsh Athletics and Irish Universities Fresher’s team in Dublin.

Fellow Dyfed athlete Alaw Beynon-Thomas (Strade) has been running consistently throughout the winter and having won the Welsh under 20 title at Swansea two weeks earlier, she led the field home in Brecon by nearly 30secs. It was her first Schools’ title and will lead the girl’s team in Dublin.

The junior and middle age group athletes make the long trek to Perth for their international which will be held on the picturesque golf course at Strathallan School.

For the first time ever Wales will field a set of twins as Ffion and Rhianwedd Price (Llandrindod) make the team  a year young. Of the team of eight in the junior girls five are year 8 which includes Welsh under 13 winner Hywelis Thomas-Howells (Bryntawe) and the fastest 800m runner in her age group in the UK this winter, Lauren Bell (Bro Gwaun). Hywelis has now had to withdraw from the event and is replaced with Lauren Harries (Penweddig)

Five of middle girls are also a year young with experienced international Angharad Davies (Llandovery College) leading the side for the second year. Zoe Thomas (Porthcawl) has had a thrilling winter season and will be a threat to the top athletes from England, Ireland and Scotland.

The junior boys will also field a young and inexperienced team with Elliot Hardee (Bettws) and Mathew O’Leary (St Joseph’s) renewing the close battle they had in the rain, mud and wind at Brecon. Welsh under 13 champion Matthew Antioniazzi (Lewis Boys) and Daniel Lewis (Dwr-y-Felin) will be the youngest members of the junior team and will gain from the experience in Perth.

Jonathan Hopkins (Brynteg) won the title impressively at Brecon and will captain the boy’s team. Mold Alun School provide two athletes in the middle age group team in experienced campaigners Charlie Hulson and James Wright
