Schools’ Combined Events Indoor International Glasgow

A young and inexperienced team competed with great success at Kelvin Hall on the weekend with multi-talented David Guest (Bryntirion- Glamorgan Valleys) once again providing evidence of his huge potential and talent in winning for the second year.

Despite competing against athletes a year older, the Bridgend 16-year old scored 3856 points for a new meeting record adding 167 points to Edward Dunford’s record which has stood since 2001.

The boys team captain gained a huge 900 pints for his 60m hurdles run in 8.33s, the fastest run of the day and was the only athlete to break 23 seconds (22.66s) for the 200m. A personal best long jump of 6.89m killed off any thoughts the opposition had of closing the point’s gap.

His solo winning run of 2:05.45s, a margin of over four seconds in the 800m in front of the top seeded six athletes brought a standing ovation from the crowd.

Guest no doubt inspired another athlete with a year left in the same age group as Lauren 0’Reilly (Chepstow- SE Wales) took a well deserved silver medal in the under 18 age group.

The former gymnast is fast developing a reputation as one on the top sprint hurdlers in the UK but in Glasgow showed her true fighting spirit to climb up from third to second in another dramatic solo run in the 800m (2:30.71s), the fastest time of the day

Personal best in all five events as well as point’s total best ensured O’Reilly will be a strong challenger for the top podium place in 12 months time.

O’Reilly helped the team to take bronze with the girls under 16 team also claiming the same colour as an inspired Megan Rogers (Penley – NE Wales) with four personal bests just missed out on a medal by 16-points.

The team recorded 40 personal best and augurs well for the future of combined events in Wales.
