MARTIN REES TO ATTEMPT WORLD 10K RECORD IN GREAT WALES RUN
Some of Wales top distance runners will be looking for fast times at the Great Wales Run 10k in Cardiff Bay on Sunday. Martin Rees will be looking to break his world masters 55 record that he already holds from the Manchester 10k in May. Martin knocked 8 seconds off his world 5k record last week in Gloucester so is in great form going into Sunday’s race. If the weather stays good he will be hoping to run faster than 32:17 which was run in very windy conditions.
Chris Davies, Wales top 10k runner for years will be hoping to run close to 29 minutes after being injured on and off for the last couple of years. Still not fully fit Chris is hoping strong opposition will help him to a fast time. Also competing on Sunday is James Thie and it will be interesting to see what he can do in a fast 10k. Michael Johnson has a pb of 30:12 in Manchester this year and will be looking for a sub 30 minute clocking. Simon Lawson will be running in his first competitive race since February but will also be looking to run a fast time. An interesting runner on the start line will be Dewi Griffiths. 16 year old Dewi ran for the under 20 Great Britain in the World Cross Country Championships and is in great shape. Although young, Dewi will be looking for a good race and will have plenty of competition around him.
On the womens side Cath Dugdale is training well and will be hoping for a good 10k race having moved onto the road now. Cath has run a couple of ½ marathons this year and is looking to move up to the marathon. A fast 10k is on the cards. Andrea Whitcombe could also be on the start line, although she could have competed in the British Triathlon Championships the day before in Parc Brynbach.
Marathon legend Steve Jones is over from his base in Colorado to run on Sunday. Steve ran 27:59 (27:39 on the track) back in 1983 before breaking the world record for the marathon. Now back training most days, will the 54 year old jog around or will he be tempted to chase some of the pack?
