MICHAEL JOHNSON TAKES FIRST ROAD TITLE
Welsh 10k Championships – Caernarfon – Sunday, 31st August 2008
After a first sub 30 minute clocking last month in the Great Wales Run, Michael Johnson was in confident mood going into the Welsh 10k Championships in Caernarfon on Sunday.
On a scenic, rural course and run in very wet conditions Michael had company for the first half of the race from Neil Renault, a 218 marathon runner from Long Eaton. However he pulled away on the hills to win by 15 seconds.
Marc Hobbs beat his twin brother Lewys by 10 seconds to take silver and bronze respectively. Both have been ill recently and 32 mins on that course was a good comeback for both of them.
Ricky Challinor had another superb race to finish 5th overall and first in the under 23 Championships. Swansea Harriers won the team title with Marc and Lewys being joined by Steve Davies and Andrew Cleverly. However Eryri were only 3 points behind.
Marilyn Kitchin won the women’s title at the age of 40 in a time of 39:24.
The Inter Regional Championships were incorporated into the Welsh Championships but unfortunately was very poorly supported. This partly due to the race being held just one week before the Cardiff 10k.
The North had a strong team on home soil and beat the West by 1 point. Only the North could provide a women’s team so they won with 10 points.
