The Welsh Athletics Junior Championships, held in the National Indoor Athletics Centre last weekend, saw a massive 18 new records being set, making it a great start for the 2010 season for all athletes and spectators involved. Together with the 7 records set in the Senior Championships on January 23rd, they are testimony to the great level reached by the talented batch of athletes Wales can boast at the moment. Among the performances that lit up the weekend was even one that beat a 40-year-old record.

Swansea Harriers’ Hannah Brier wooed the crowds on Saturday with a great performance in the U13 Girls 60m Final, setting a new Welsh Record and Championship Best performance with an 8.23 times. This achievement is made even greater by her setting of another CBP a few minutes before: the Swansea athlete, who fell in the heats and sported some very visible bandaging on both a shoulder and a knee for the rest of the competition, finished the 200m with an incredible 27.43s time.

Another double-winner was Sion Roberts from Wrexham AC, who set Welsh Record and CBP in both the U13 Boys 200m and 60m with times of 26.07s and 8.08s respectively. The two remaining record-breaking performances on Saturday 30th were by Jamaul Whyte of Cardiff AAC, who equalled the Championships’ Best time in the U17 Men 60m Final with a time of 7.13s, and by Miles Keller-Jenkins (Swansea Harriers), who set a height of 1.48 in the Under 13 boys High Jump to record a new CBP.

Sunday saw another collection of excellent performances in front of a warm public. Adele Nicoll of Oswestry Olympians threw 12.29m in the U15 Girls shot, a new CBP and Welsh Record, while a new All Comers Record was set by Gloucester’s Gemma Turtle, who competed in the Senior Women’s 3000m final and set a stunning 9:08.1 time. The Senior Men race, a very tense affair between David Westbury and Tom Marshall, saw the Derby AC athlete set a time of 8:17.8, a new Championship Best Performance beating Bernie Plain’s 8:18.6, dating back to 1970. An excellent performance in a absolutely enjoyable race which deserved such an accolade.

Long Jump saw CBPs in both the U20 Men and U20 Women categories, courtesy of Stoke’s James Gardner (6.99m) and Rhiannon Yates of Newport Harriers (5.60m). Hannah Thomas (Wrexham) and Brigid Eades (Newport Harriers) set CBPs in the 200m and 400m U20 Women races with a 25.28s and 57.62s performances, while the day’s last record time was set by double-gold medal winner Gareth Hopkins in the U20 Men 200m final – his time an excellent 22.13s.
