Last weekend, several Welsh athletes took part in the Home Countries Combined Events, with some very noteworthy performances taking place.
On a high-standards competitions, with some exciting battles being fought, David Guest competed as a Senior and came up winner with a Commonwealth Games qualifying standard-busting 7330, almost 400 points better than his closest rival, Scotland's David Feeney. This result represents a NEW WELSH RECORD for Senior Decathlon, beating Clive Longe's 40-year-old record set in 1969.
An excellent result for the Bridgend athlete, especially considering that his day 2 performances were hampered by a slight knee injury that required lots of ice, massage and bandaging.
Curtis Matthews, at his very first decathlon, performed very well throughout the two days and is showing great promise for the future. His final score of 5516 is very encouraging, especially considering he didn't set any height in the Pole Vault.
The Welsh girls taking part in the competitions started very well and had promising totals at the end of day 1, but their second day of competition was marred by physical problems and sickness. After losing senior Katia Lannon to injury before competition even started, Caryl Granville had to withdraw with an hamstring problem during long jump. Katie Lewis woke up on day two with a fever and was forced out of the competition, leaving only Lauren O'Reilly (U20) and Katie Gardiner (U17) to fly Wales' colours.
Gardiner finished as our best scorer with a good 4162 points, followed by O'Reilly with 3907.
