The Cardiff 10k road race was held on a new course this year and produced an exciting race despite not having any Kenyans in the field. The race included in Inter Area match between Wales, North of England, South of England and the Midlands and only 5 seconds separated the top 5 finishers.

Wales outstanding prospect, 17 year old Simon Lawson (Cardiff) knocked a minute off his personal best time to finish first Welshman and 7th overall in 30:51, closely followed by fell runner Gwyn Owen (Eryri) , also in a personal best of 30:55. Another personal best came from James Williams (Cardiff) in 31:31. Good performances also from Richard Gardiner (Cardiff) who has been struggling with niggles but needed a run out before running the marathon for Great Britain in Kosice next month, Daniel Gurmin (Swansea) and 54 year old Martin Rees (Neath) who was also first vet. It was the first road welsh vest for Simon, James and Daniel.

The Welsh womens team also produced some good results. Tammy Lewis-Jones (NWRRC) brought into the team on Thursday and wearing her first Welsh vest ran a 40 second personal best in 37:24. A solid performance from Ann Thomas (Trots) and 17 year old Leanne Fitzgerald (Cardiff) was drafted into the team on the morning of the race and is looking forward to a future on the road.

The next Inter Area road match is the Chichester 10k on 7th October and then a full international against England and Scotland in the Portsmouth 10 mile road race on 28th October.
