Welsh Coaches and athletes were delighted to welcome former Welsh champion, Commonwealth games athlete and former Olympian Sean Pickering back into Wales to contribute to the third of the national squads (20/10/07).
Sean who was born in Cardiff whilst his father Ron made a still remembered massive contribution to Welsh Athletics has himself established the same massive reputation in the throws community as a truly world class coach.
Sean contribution to the day was to give an excellent presentation on power development in athletics and made that applicable to all aspects of the sport. He showed the potential of a new way forward with athletes training far more smartly to be successful in an increasingly competitive environment.
Later he ran a workshop on discus and rotational shot to help many of the very talented youngsters who attended to become more aware of their potential. As with so many great coaches Sean does not believe there are ‘coaching secrets’ and was on hand to give all the coaches and athletes detailed answers to any question they chose to ask.
On the following day with no scheduled squad Sean, Nigel Bevan (NEC Shot, himself an Olympic athlete) and Gareth Gilbert (NEC discus) continued with those of the squad who could turn up to NIAC for a second time.
Sean continues to have a massive influence on British throwing and is very involved at UKA level in throws development. Let us all hope that this is a beginning we build from and that we can invite Sean many more times in the future. Click pictures for larger image. Pic 1 Sean Pickering.
