Nigel Hetherington, Performance Development Manager said:

“The commitment to improvement from both athletes and coaches in the first year of the Scotland CWG and WMRT programmes has been generally very good. Inevitably some haven’t made it, however, these Scottish programmes are not safety nets and it is imperative that athletes of this calibre take responsibility for creating and maintaining the right environment for their continued development. Athletes are selected or deselected to the programme on individual merit against known and agreed criteria. The determination shown by new programme additions to make the grade means that we have taken on seven new exciting 2010 prospects from the end of season review.

“The launch of the new CWYG programme fills us with a combination of excitement and trepidation. These are unquestionably talented athletes who have earned their place and are potential medallists for Pune next year. However, we also recognise that they are developing youngsters and twelve months can be a long time at this age. Some will make it and some may not but through no fault of their own. Meanwhile others will definitely come through by October next year to make their claim for a place on the Scottish team ”

Francis Smith, Brodies 2007 Scottish National Champion and UK Championship bronze medallist (400m hurdles), a newcomer to the Programme for 2007/08 said:

“’Thunderstruck’ is the first word that popped into my head when I was told about the Commonwealth Games Programme. It’s a fantastic opportunity to be involved in the Programme and gain the support of scottishathletics on the road to 2010. Being involved in the scottishathletics – Bank of Scotland supported squads has given me some very useful information to take back into my own training, now it’s time to keep working hard to repay the faith that scottishathletics has shown in me by adding me to the Programme after a good 2007 season.”

Aileen McGillivary, UKA Performance/Talent Development Manager, Scotland

“With the UK World Class Plan focused at Olympic and World level it is hugely important for Scotland to have similar programmes in place to support success for Scottish athletes at Commonwealth Games level and in addition work in partnership with UK Athletics to underpin Global success for Team GB & NI. Through continuous performance management and early talent identification I have no doubt that the benefits of the programmes will be seen not only in 2010 but also contribute towards the development of more World Class Scottish athletes."
