Penarth’s Brett Morse is aiming to affirm his rising star credentials at the Welsh Senior Athletics Championships next month (15 June 2008).

The Cardiff student is certainly a name to note for the future. Currently ranked third in the world for discus, he is hoping to earn selection to the World Junior Athletics Championships (8-13 July 2008) in the city of Bydgoszcz in Northern Poland.

The Welsh Seniors will be an important warm-up for the athlete who also excels in shot:

“I always love competing at the Welsh Seniors – it’s my National Championships. I am going all out for a second title in shot and a third title in discus. The event is an important one in our calendar as you see young athletes gaining experience. It’s a serious competition where younger talents can rub shoulders with athletes who are making international teams.”

If selected, it will be the thrower’s first World Juniors event:

“I am very confident that I am going to go – I’m ranked world no.3 in discus. I really want a medal – it would be absolutely awesome. My toughest rivals are guys from the Ukraine, Germany and South Africa who are all really strong and will also be going for the podium.

“My season’s been going really well this year. I’ve got a Welsh record in every competition in both shot and discus - bar one event and I think that was down to the weather.”

Matt Newman from Welsh Athletics explained: “The Welsh Championships is the stepping stone for our talented, young athletes to become successful seniors. Athletics in Wales has a long and illustrious history but the future is looking equally bright with emerging talents across a number of disciplines, particularly athletes on the Welsh Talent Development Academy.”

The Welsh Senior Athletics Championships is to be held at the University of Swansea Athletics Track on Sunday 15 June from 11.30 - 17.30. The cost of entry is £5 and a programme is included in the price.

The World Junior Championships will be held in Bydgoszcz, Poland from the 8-13 July.
