Welsh Athletics were invited to enter a ladies team in the International Throws Festival held in Templemore, Ireland on Saturday 1st September. The International was a four way match between Wales, Switzerland, Iceland and Ireland.
Three Welsh athletes competed;
Adele Nicoll in the Shot and Discus Throw
Toni Wells in the Hammer Throw
Tasia Stephens in the Javelin
The Welsh team was by far the youngest team in the competition, competing against senior throwers from the other nations. The three Welsh competitors all had excellent performances on the day and Wales managed to achieve 3 medals from the 4 events contested.
Adele Nicoll, approaching the end of an excellent season, achieved a silver medal in the Shot with a best performance of 13.23 metres. She followed this up with a bronze medal in the Discus with 43.10 metres.
Toni Wells achieved Wales’ third medal on the day with a bronze in the Hammer Throw with a best performance of 51.29 metres.
Tasia Stephens achieved a highly impressive 5th place in the Javelin, a competition that was won in new Irish record figures of 52.97 metres. Tasia’s best performance on the day was 40.00 metres, her fourth competition of the season recording figures of 40 metres or more.
This was a very successful trip, which provided the correct level of International competition for 3 developing athletes.
