Cardiff AAC Open Meeting

Saturday was the final summer open meeting at the Cardiff International Sports Stadium. The meeting again was well supported with over 200 athletes, providing some great competition for the Australian Paralympic team as they made their final preparations pre-London. The meeting was lucky to also see the best weather of the day, as performances matched with 36 personal best performances.

The highlight again was a brilliant double by Olympian and European 400m Champion Rhys Williams (CAAC), winning the 100m & 200m. The 100m in 10.91 was a pb and was just outside his pb in the 200m- which he set in the meeting on the Wednesday before.

Elliott Slade (CAAC) also stepped down distances winning the 400m in 49.09 (PB) and then also managed a pb in the 200m (23.61). The event was capped off with a 4 x 100m relay, which saw a maximum 8 teams battling it out with the host club coming out on top. Which was fun to see so many support the relays as also included a team just made of family members ‘The Morgan’s’ from Newport Harriers. Maybe that could be a new Championship event!

The meeting was made such a success again by the huge support of the officials and volunteers that gave up their time to make it possible. Thanks also to Cardiff AAC for providing great support for the meeting and the feedback from the Paralympian’s, coaches, parents and athletes was very positive towards the whole series of open meetings.
