Five Welsh athlete have been announced as part of the squad from which the Aviva Great Britain and Northern Ireland Team will be finally selected to compete in Helsinki, Finland at the European Athletics Championships.
Christian Malcolm (Dan Pfaff) has been selected for the 200m and the Relay squad, while Gareth Warburton (Darrell Maynard), Rhys Williams (Dan Pfaff) and Brett Morse (Vesteinn Hafsteinsson) will be lining up for the 800m, 400m hurdles and discus throw respectively. There will be a Welsh representation in the women's half of the team as well, with pole vaulter Sally Peake (Scott Simpson) on the 109-strong list for Helsinki.
Nominations are provisional at the moment, with any track athletes gaining automatic qualification to the Olympic Games at the Trials being de-selected in order to focus on their preparation for the London Games.
Field event athletes will be permitted to compete in Helsinki should the additional competition opportunity benefit their overall build up.
This year’s European Championships marks the first ever event to take place during an Olympic year, following the decision by European Athletics to take the competition into a biennial cycle from 2012 onwards.
The final Aviva GB & NI team for the event, which takes place Wednesday 27 June – Sunday 1 July, will be confirmed on the morning of Monday 25 June – after the conclusion of the Aviva 2012 Trials.
Congratulations to the five Welsh athletes and their coaches!
