Discus Throw Olympic hopeful Brett Morse is the latest of our athletes to give us an insight on his preparations for this crucial year:
This is the first of my blog entries going forward to the 2012 Olympic Games and 2014 Commonwealth Games. I am currently on a warm weather training camp in sunny San Diego, getting ready for the 2012 season. This is a very important camp for me as I have just started my strength programme which will give me a great base for the rest of the season and for when I start lifting for more speed and discus related strength. Although I have just started the camp, I have aready hit quite a few PBs over a number of lifts which gives me great confidence because if I can put all this extra strength and power into my throw, then 2012 could be a very special season.
I am also working very hard throwing heavy discs which is making me specifically strong and allowing me to work on certain technical points - as with the heavy implements if you are technically off then it shows a lot more than throwing the regular 2kg competition discus.
The camp is very good fun and there is a great atmosphere here, my training partner and fellow Welsh shot putter Ryan Spencer-Jones is also training very well and both of us are progressing in the right way. I'm weighing in at a light 115kg right now, which is 10kg lighter than I was at the Commonwealth Games in Dehli in 2010. I'm very happy with this as I throw off complete speed so being lighter and stronger will allow me to be a lot more explosive, hopefully making me throw a lot further.
I will blog again just before I leave the camp with how the competitions I have out here go and as it will be the end of my strength phase I will get my PB's in Clean, Snatch, Bench Press and squat on video and post them up with the weight of what each lift is.
Until then follow me on Twitter @Brett_Morse and take a look at my website www.brettmorse.co.uk for regular updates.
See you soon and stay classy San Diego! B
