Weekend Round-Up - 7th & 8th July

Lausanne Diamond League - Thursday 5th July 

Owen Smith (Cardiff AAC) finished 3rd in the Men's 400m B Race at the Lausanne Diamond League, clocking a time of 46.90 in a race won by the experienced Martyn Rooney in 46.17. Melissa Courtney (Poole AC) finished 10th in the Women's 1,500m with a clocking of 4:06:27. 

European Athletics u18 Championships - Gyor, Hungary - Friday 6th to Sunday 8th July

Welsh duo Ben Thomas (Neil Thomas; Carmarthen Harriers) and Kiara Frizelle (Chris Jones; Cardiff AAC) both performed strongly at the European Athletics u18 Championships in Gyor, Hungary over the weekend. Ben advanced from his 2,000m Steeplechase heat on Friday evening with a time of 6:01:47, before finishing 9th in Sunday's Final with a brilliant lifetime best clocking of 5:53:47. Kiara, who proved her fitness for selection after overcoming injury just 2 weeks ago, finished 13th in the Women's 3,000m with a time of 9:51:08.

Welsh Schools Championships - Cardiff - Saturday 7th July 

Wales' top schools' athletes descended on Cardiff for the annual Welsh Schools Championships on Saturday afternoon. Despite the difficult conditions and rising temperatures, there were a number of excellent performances on the track and in the field - including two Welsh Age-Group Records and five Championship Best Performances. British Milers Club Grand Prix - Eltham - Saturday 7th July 

Gold Coast 10,000m runner Jenny Nesbitt (Worcester AC) ran to a new lifetime best performance of 9:11 as she won the Women's 3,000m A Race at the BMC Grand Prix in Eltham. There was also a lifetime best performance from Cardiff's Jake Smith who won the Men's 3,000m B Race in a time of 8:22. Rachel McClay (Bracknell AC) won the Women's 1,500m B Race in a season's best time of 4:26, whilst Jade Williams (Amman Valley) finished 6th in the Women's 1,500m A Race with a time of 4:22. 

Ammanford 10k - Sunday 8th July 

Matt Rees (Swansea Harriers) and Rhodie Jones took victory at the Ammanford 10k on Sunday morning. Rees won the Men's 10k in a time of 33:49, ahead of Swansea teammate Marc Hobbs (34:31) and Port Talbot athlete Ben Williams (35:03 - PB). Jones won the Women's 10k race in a time of 41:09 ahead of Michelle Cole (3M Gorseinon; 42:20) and Wendy Price (Carmarthen Harriers; 42:41)
