Simplyhealth Great Edinburgh Cross Country
Three of Wales’ brightest talents kicked off 2018 in style with superb performances whilst competing for Great Britain at the Great Edinburgh Cross Country International. In the Junior Men’s race, Matt Willis (self-coached, Wrexham AC) put up a brave battle against the best of Europe and America, with an aggressive performance that saw him rewarded with a third place finish, just behind Europeans Simen Haugen and Quassim Qumaiz. Jake Hayward (James Thie, Cardiff AAC) continued his impressive Winter with an 8th place finish in the same race.
In the Junior Women’s race, Cari Hughes (Andy Walling, Swansea Harriers) produced a well judged race as she finished strongly to finish in 4th place and leading Brit, she also helped the British Junior Women to claim the team title.
Kristian Jones (Swansea Harriers) claimed a comfortable victory in the Senior Men’s Scottish Inter-District Championship which took place as part of the International.
Tom Marshall (James Thie, Cardiff AAC) also competed as part of the Senior Mixed International Relay. The team brought home the victory beating both Team Europe anmd Team America in the process.
Cardiff Met Grand Prix, NIAC
Jeremiah Azu (Helen James, Cardiff AAC) produced a superb performance in the Men’s 60m, running an impressive 6.76 to win his heat, Azu returned to win the final in a time of 6.81 – the time was the 3rd fastest by a British junior so far in 2018. Macey Jones (Nigel Lewis, Cwmbran Harriers) started her season well, with a jump of 11.75m to win the Junior Women’s triple Jump, while Carmarthen Harrier Will Edwards (Stephen Bailey) jumped 2.05m to win the Men’s High Jump. Sarah Omoregie (Gareth Lease, Cardiff AAC) will be looking to continue her impressive performances from 2017, and she started her winter with a solid 14.31m to win the Senior Women’s shot put.
Northern Athletics Championships, Sheffield
Leon Greenwood (Dave Norton, Swansea Harriers) produced a superb new personal best of 21.48 seconds to claim the bronze medal at the North of England Championships.
Perche Elite Tour, Orleans, France
Sally Peake (Scott Simpson, Birchfield Harriers) opened her 2018 season with a fifth place finish with a best height of 4.15m.
Vulcan Invitational, Alabama, USA
Ffion Price (Cardiff AAC) opened her indoor season with a comfortable victory and a time of 2.09.79.
