Griffiths had only decided to target the marathon a few months ago. He had made the decision following a successful year which included new lifetime bests over almost every distance.
The Swansea man then lowered his Half Marathon best to 1:01:33 at the Cardiff University / Cardiff Half Marathon at the start of October, proving that marathon preperations were going well.
In Frankfurt he reached the half way point in 1:03:46 and the 35km in 1:46:33 seeing him on target to run 2:08:27 at that point.
Despite slowing slightly in the closing stages, the West Whalian stopped the clock in 2:09:49.
As a result, Griffiths has gone to second in the Welsh all-time rankings behind Steve Jones and ahead of double Olympian Steve Brace. He is also now top of the Welsh rankings for 2017 for 5,000m, 10,000m, Half Marathon and Marathon.
His mark also takes him to 15th on the British all-time list and makes him the fastest British man since double Olympic Champion Mo Farah in 2014.
