Welsh Athletes In Action at British Championships

The British Championships which incorporates the official World Championship trial takes place this weekend in Birmingham with nearly 50 Welsh Athletes in action.

From the Welsh Athletes set to compete we have Bethan Davies (Andi Drake) who will be looking to retain her 5km Walk title from last year. the Cardiff athlete goes into the championships with her place for London already booked in the 20km walk after finishing second at the trial in Leeds last weekend.

Reigning British Indoor Champion Sally Peake (Scott Simpson) will certainly be in contention in the Women’s Pole Vault and after her Silver Medal last year; Sally is definitely one to watch. Recent British under 23 champion Adele Nicoll (Adrian Palmer) will be in action in the women’s Shot, the Cardiff based athlete made the podium last year and it is likely she will be in contention once again this year.

Reigning Paralympic Champion Aled Davies (Ryan Spencer Jones) will go head to head with fellow Welshman Gareth Winter in the men’s Shot and with the latter being a bronze medallist from last year’s British Championships; it will be an exciting dual.

David Omoregie (Benke Blomkvist) will be looking to better his fourth-place finish from last year and with the Cardiff AC athlete currently ranked second in the UK, a podium finish is certainly on the cards. David’s younger sister Sarah Omoregie (Gareth Lease)  will be competing in her first British Senior Championship in the women’s shot, it will be a good opportunity for Sarah ahead of the Commonwealth Youth Games in the coming weeks.

Brett Morse will also be competing in the men’s discus, last year’s silver medallist and former British Champion is looking in fine form after taking the Welsh title a few weeks ago.

The sprint events will be packed with Welsh Talent, down to start are 8 male athletes sand 7 female athletes ready to go head to head, which demonstrates the depth in Welsh sprinting at the moment.

Welsh Endurance athletes have been in fine form this Summer, and a  number will go to Birmingham with high hopes of bringing back medals.

In the 1500m, Cardiff AAC pair Rowan Axe (Craig Winrow) and Tom Marshall (James Thie) will be in buoyant mood, having both run under 3.39 this Summer. Whilst in the men’s Steeplechase, Ieuan Thomas (James Thie) and Jonathan Hopkins will both have half an eye on their first National title. Melissa Courtney (Rob Denmark) will know that a top 2 finish in the women’s 1500m will confirm a place at the World Championships having run the qualifying standard in Hengelo in early June. Joining Melisa in the 1500m will be Former NCAA Champion Rhianwedd Price (Houston Franks) will be looking to build on her solid start to the Summer that saw her running for Great Britain in the European Team Championships last weekend.
