Jake Heyward and Bethan Davies were in fine form on the weekend, with both of the Cardiff based athletes breaking Welsh Records. Heyward who is coached by Paul Darney finished in 7th place in a new personal best of 3:44.31 at Watford on Saturday at the BMC Grand Prix. This performance is remarkable not only because his time was under the qualifying standard for the up and coming European Junior Championships, but it also broke the Welsh Record which stood for 33 years. The previous record was held by Newport Harrier Neil Horsfield who went on to run 3:35 so the future certainly looks bright for the young Cardiff Athlete who already has a European Youth 1500m title to his name.
Bethan Davies who is coached by Andi Drake was on song at the British World Championship 20km race walking trials on Sunday afternoon too. The Cardiff AC athlete finished in 2nd place for the British Championships and once again walked under the World Championship qualifying time, this should put her in a good place for selection ahead of this summer’s World Championships in London. Bethan’s performance was impressive to say the least but it is also important to mention that she also broke her own Welsh Record again with a time of 1:33:04.
