Heyward crowned European Junior Champion

The European Junior Outdoor Track & field championships were held in Grosetto on the weekend (July 20th-23rd). A Great Britain team of 55 athletes made the trip to Italy with 3 Welsh Athletes in action.

The highlight of the championships was a phenomenal performance from Cardiff AAC’s Jake Heyward (Paul Darney) who won the European Junior 1500m title. It was an impressive performance from Heyward who played his tactics perfectly to storm away from the rest of the field in the home straight to add the title to his European Youth title which he won last year. It’s been an incredible year for the Cardiff based athlete who broke the Welsh under 20 1500 metres all-time record this year which had previously been held for 33 years.

Hannah Brier (Steve Fudge) was in action as part of the Women’s 4x100m relay team, The Swansea Harrier led the team to qualification through the heats but sadly had to pull out of the final due to an injury concern. Despite missing the final, Hannah still received her bronze medal as the team finished 3rd in the final.

Kristian Jones (Glyn Hawkes) was the third Welsh Athlete in action, the Cardiff AAC sprinter ran the third leg for the 4x100m relay team in both the heats and final. It was a close 4th finish for the Great Britain team who sadly just missed out on a place on the podium.

The three Welsh Athletes and coach James Thie assisted the Great Britain team in placing 2nd overall on the medal table.
