The Welsh Indoor Junior Championships is once again approaching, with nearly 600 athletes heading to the National Indoor Athletics Centre, Cardiff on Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th February to compete for the title of Welsh Champion.
The four Junior age groups will once again compete over the same weekend, producing an action-packed competition full of up and coming junior athletes.
Fresh from claiming the Welsh Senior 400m Indoor title only last weekend, Joe Brier (Swansea Harriers) heads the field in the both U20 Men’s 400m and 200m. Joe will look to defend the 400m title that he won last year, and with the 2016 200m Champion Kristian Jones (Cardiff AAC) not ont he start lists, Joe will look to add that title to his name. He will face stiff competition from the likes of Tyler Williams (Newport Harriers) & Arron Owen (Cardiff AAC), all who have personal bests close to the 22 second barrier.
Leading the U20 Women’s field in the 60m is sixth place finisher at the World Junior Championships Hannah Brier (Swansea Harriers). Hannah will look to defend the title that she won here last year, setting a Championship Best Performance in the process.
Osaze Aghedo (Swansea Harriers) is in fine form in the U20 Men’s Triple Jump and after breaking the 15-metre barrier for the first time at the Welsh Senior Indoor Championships last weekend, he will look to reproduce a similar distance and claim another Welsh Title.
In the younger age groups, Jacob Reynolds (Cardiff AAC, 800m) & Carys Poole (Swansea Harriers, 60m Hurdles) will face new challenges this season. Both set Welsh records in their respective events last season as U13’s but having stepped up to U15’s this year, they will be looking add the U15 Welsh Titles to their names.
With so many athletes chasing the title of Welsh Champion, we must recognise the hard work of the clubs and coaches across Wales in preparing the athletes for competition.
Welsh Athletics would like to thank everyone who contributes towards making these championships possible.
We hope you will join us from 10.45 on Saturday 11th February for what promises to be an action-packed weekend!
Pob Lwc pawb!
