Third for Griffiths in Armagh

Dewi Griffiths (Swansea Harriers) ran under the 14 minute barrier for the first time on Thursday evening, to finish third at the 27th Armagh International Road Races.

The start of the 2016 race

The multi-lap race is hugely popular with Welsh athletes and always attracts a strong contingent to compete at the event in the historic Cathedral City.

Races are held over 5km for men and over the 3km distance for women. The event enjoyed it’s largest ever fields with 77 athletes running under 15 minutes in the men’s race.

Griffiths previous highest finish at the race was seventh but the 2016 UK Inter-Counties Cross Country champion is enjoying a run of fine form that has seen him look extremely strong over the last twelve months. Just behind Griffiths, Kristian Jones also secured a new P.B. in 14.02 to finish fifth.

Charlie Hulson (Sale Harriers) had won the race twelve months ago but had to settle for 12th this time despite being in the mix throughout the early stages.

Wales sent development teams to the races. The men’s team were led home by Joshua Griffiths who had led the race on the first lap, going on to run 14.18 well under his previous best for the distance.

Kyran Roberts (Carmarthen Harriers) time of 14.23 was also very impressive.

Iolo Hughes (Sale Harriers), Oliver Barbaresi, Ciaran Lewis (Cardiff AAC), James Vincent (Cardiff AAC) and Elliot Lawrence (Swansea Harriers) finished in that order and all with new best times for 5km.

Julia Cooke (Cheltenham Harriers) was the first Welsh athlete home in the women’s race, running 9.37 to finish in the top 20 amongst a highly competitive international field that saw the course record smashed by double Olympian, Laura Weigtman (Morpeth Harriers).

Clara Evans led the Welsh team with a new best of 9.47 taking 17 seconds off her mark from Armagh in 2016.

2015 World Mountain Running Championship bronze medallist, Bronwen Jenkinson ran 10.23 on her debut over 3km.
