Welsh Athletics Steeplechase Development Day
Wednesday 19th April
Welsh Athletics South, East and West Regions held a successful Steeplechase Development Day at Swansea Stadium on 19th April.
After a general warm up, lead coach Wynford Leyshon took the group of young athletes through a set of hurdle drills focusing on lead and trail leg mechanics. This was followed by a challenging session of 6 x 400m, alternating reps on the flat and with reps over hurdles.
After lunch athletes went through some water jump drills in the indoor centre. Back on the outdoor track they re-capped on hurdles technique with clear improvement from all. Just in case they still had some energy left, the athletes concluded with a 5-minute 200m continuous relay.
During the debrief everyone said they enjoyed the day, and they were provided with some steeplechase fixture dates, starting with the Welsh U17-U20-Senior League at Newport Stadium on 23rd April.
Wyn Leyshon was supported on the day by coaches Darryn McAtee and Tim Fry.
Also in attendance was one of Wales’ best endurance runners, Jade Williams, who joined in the sessions and took time out to speak to the others about the transition from development to senior performance athlete.
Athletes in attendance:
Ffion Gregson-Lewis, Rhian Jones, Ellie Powell, Jess Wadey (all Cardiff), Bethan Wainwright (Newport), Katrin Higginson, Ffion Higginson (both Bridgend)
Will Arnold (Swansea), Remi Adebiyi, David Locke (both Newport), Owain Edwards (Cardiff), Rhys Davies (Carmarthen)
