Obituary - Irene Jenkins

Irene JenkinsIt is with extreme sadness that Welsh Athletics reports the passing away of Newport Harriers stalwart Irene Jenkins.

Irene became involved with Newport Harriers in the 1970s when her grandchildren took up athletics, initially just coming along to support them but gradually getting more involved in the running of the club.

She was a key member of the club and held various officerships throughout the 1970/80s including treasurer and membership secretary. For many years she ran and organised the catering on training evenings and fixtures hosted at the Glebelands.

Irene spent many hours behind the scenes ensuring that the finances of the club were maintained in good order and for her work she was rewarded with life membership of the club and eventually held the honorary title of Patron.

Irene was well into her 70s when the club moved to Spitty Park and decided then that it was time to relinquish some of her duties. She represented the club for a number of years on the Newport Sports Council and continued in this role until health and mobility problems eventually made it impossible for her to attend meeetings.

Irene's funeral will be held on Tuesday 23rd October at the Gwent Crematorium, Croesyceiliog, Cwmbran, NP44 2BZ at 10am. Irene's wishes are that there be no flowers except direct family, but donations can be made to the MacMillian Nurses.

All are invited to refreshments after the service at the Greenmeadows Golf Club adjacent to the Crematorium.

Our thoughts are with her family at this sad time.
