Olympic Torch Relay comes to Wales - join our celebrations!

With the Olympic Torch Relay coming to Wales tomorrow, Friday 25th May, Welsh Athletics released a programme of activities to celebrate the approach to the 2012 Olympic Games.

All the activities in this programme are part of the 2012: Burning Ambition scheme, our answer to the most important question of the year - ARE WE READY?

Friday 25th May – Olympic Torch in Wales – Day 1

  • Torfaen – Pontypool –  Active Living Centre – 10am to 3pm

A "Come and Try" activity organised and led by Welsh Athletics Development Staff, featuring 3 athletics stations on 20 minute turnaround. We expect the activities to involve 800 local school children.

At 3pm, the children will walk into town for the passing of the torch

  • Blaenau Gwent – Brynmawr Town Centre – Blaencwm Primary School (NP23 4PR) 1:30pm to 3pm

A "Come and Try" activity organised by Blaencwm Primary School with support from the Council and Welsh Athletics.

Saturday 26th May – Olympic Torch in Wales – Day 2

  • The Rec, near Caerphilly Castle, Nantgarw Road 10am to 3pm

A multisport "Come and Try" activity with athletics as a key sport. Supported by the Welsh Athletics Development Staff. Real Radio will be in attendance, while across the road in the Castle there will be a Blue Peter Zone with a Sportshall set up.

We will operate a 5 event Pentathlon with the following events :

  • Speed Bounce
  • Speed Gate Sprint
  • Standing Long Jump
  • Shot Putt
  • High Stepper

All participants will receive a score card as they progress around the events and compare themselves against an age-based scoring chart. The events will be run by local Sports Ambassadors, who will score and organise the rotation of events. A Certificate of Achievement will be presented to each participant.

We have top Welsh Athletes lined up to attend, with each athlete signing autograph for all participating kids:

Sunday 27th May – Olympic Torch in Wales – Day 3 – Aberystwyth

We will operate a 5 event Pentathlon with the following events :

  • Speed Bounce
  • Speed Gate Sprint
  • Standing Long Jump
  • Shot Putt
  • High Stepper

All participants will receive a score card as they progress around the events and compare themselves against an age-based scoring chart. The events will be run by local Sports Ambassadors, who will score and organise the rotation of events. A Certificate of Achievement will be presented to each participant.

There will also be a Parade of local clubs and athletes at 12 noon.

Monday 28th May - Olympic Torch in Wales – Day 4 – Bangor

We will operate a 5 event Pentathlon with the following events :

Welsh Athletics' Olympic-themed activities do not end with the Torch Relay leaving Wales! There is plenty more coming on, including:

Monday 25th June – World Sports Day – Swansea City Centre

Local Schools will be competing in the 5 event challenge or the shuttle relays. There will be demonstration Pole Vault in the Square with  LOCOG activity in front of the screen. The day will be overseen by Welsh Athletics Staff with the help of local College students.

Friday 6th July & Saturday 7th July – Lighting the Flame Festival – Llanelli

  • Parc Y Stradey – 10am to 4pm

Welsh Athletics will take part in a multi sports Festival using the facilities in and around the Stadium. All 20+ schools will be coming together for a varied multi sport Friday programme with Saturday Finals.

Welsh Athletics will be the force delivering the athletics programme at the track.
