The Welsh Junior Mountain Running Championships took place in Llanberis on Sunday 19th August. The event was uphill only and also doubled up as the Welsh trial race for the British & irish Junior Hill Running Championships in Melmerby Cumbria, next month. That race is also uphill only.
Conditions for the event were damp with light rain but quite warm with no wind. The athletes made good use of the conditions to set very good times for the 5k/354m route from the center of Llanberis to the top of Maesgwm path.
Colwyn Bay's Nathan Jones, showed no ill effects after only returning from his holiday in the early hours to take the under 18 title just ahead of Gwynant Jones and Lloyd Heckler who won Silver and Bronze respectively.

Menai's Iolo Hughes was not far behind, comfortably winning the under 16 title. The Price twins again dominated the female section as Ffion won gold ahead of twin sister Rhiannwedd with Megan Withers taking bronze. In the under 16 category, Eryri's Bronwen Jenkinson was the only competitor and was therefore uncontested for the gold medal. In the under 14's race on a 3.2k/239m route up the Maesgwm path, Maldwyn's Joeseph Crutchley was a clear winner with Brecon's Heidi Davies taking the girls title.
All in all, a good learning experience for our junior athletes in a competitive enviroment.
Most of the athletes competing in the event will now be attending the England & Wales combined Junior Mountain Training Camp in Llanberis.
