The day started with a moving tribute to the late, great Chris Hallam, warmed up with a rousing rendition of the national anthem sang by Sioned Terry and ended with a sea of beaming smiles on the faces of the 14,000 plus finishers.
Once again the people of Cardiff came out in their tens of thousands to support Wales’ largest mass participation sporting event and they weren’t disappointed. The 2013 Lloyds Bank Cardiff Half Marathon was bigger, better and faster than ever before.
There was a Kenyan 1-2-3 at the front of the field, with newcomer Loitarakwai Lengurisi breaking the course record in an magnificent winning time of 61 min, 51sec.
Another Kenyan Kimetto, just fell off fast finishing Tish Jones as she took the women’s title by a second from the Bellgrave Harrier in 74min 21sec.
There were some great PB’s from Britain’s leading runners with Nick Torry (Serpentine) taking the British Half Marathon title in 64min 23sec. Ben Levsey took silver in 63:38 and Swansea’s Dewi Griffiths won bronze, and the Welsh title, in 3rd in 65:01.
Jones’ winning time in the British Women’s title race of 74:22 kept her well ahead of second place Jessica Parry-Williams (Les Croupiers) and Claire Jacobs (Tipton Harriers) .
Speaking about the day Cardiff Half Marathon Chairman Nigel Roberts said “The key aim for us was to get an inspiring route that showcases the city and everyone who ran was full of admiration for the sights and sounds from start to finish,”
“Cardiff is one of Britain’s best kept secrets and events like this give people from all over the world the chance to see what a magnificent city it is and what it has to offer. The weather was kind, the course was fast and the people of Cardiff came out in their tens of thousands to support what was a record breaking field.
“With a bid already lodged with the IAAF to host their World Half Marathon Championships here in Cardiff in 2016, I don’t think we could have asked for a better event.”
