It was a case of joy and despair for the North Wales senior men’s team at the Settle Hills 11.3km Inter counties Championships.
They would have been more than happy with the silver team medals beforehand but, to miss out on the gold by just one point left them wondering; what if?
Still, an excellent result for North Wales competing in ideal dry and calm weather conditions on the quite fast running course.
North Wales were led home by 2010 British Fell Running Champion Tim Davies who finished 5th in a time of 48:59, with 11th placed Matt Roberts 49:59 just ahead of 12th placed Eryri club colleague Richard Roberts 50:04.
They were the North’s three scorers and lost out to Yorkshire for the gold medals by just the single point, 25 to 26, with Northern Ireland taking the bronze medals with 29 points.
African athlete Wegene Tafase, running for Scotland West, won the event in a time of 46.06 ahead of North West Counties Nick Swinburn 46:23.
The Inter-Counties Championships held on Saturday.
In the first race of the day, North Wales Eryri athlete Bronwen Jenkinson won the bronze medal in the under 16 women’s race while Menai T&F athlete Iolo Hughes just missed out on the gold medal in the under 18’s men’s race, losing out in a sprint finish with Yorkshire’s Max Wharton by two seconds.
Iolo and Colwyn Bay’s Jacob Griffith also won team silvers.
Overall, a well organised event in scenic Yorkshire.
