A Wales team travelled to Antrim this weekend for the Home Countries Cross Country International at Greenmount Campus.
The hosts offered a warm welcome, the weather conditions were dry and cold and the course was quite testing in places.
We had a fairly young team, with three athletes representing Wales at cross country for the first time – congratulations to Matthew Dickinson, Mark Jones and Bronwen Jenkinson. We were also missing some key members of the team, following their selection for the World Cross Country Championships.
Heidi Davies finished 4th in a well-run race. Ellie Atkinson was 20th, Lara Philippart 27th and Bronwen Jenkinson 31st. In the boys’ race Matthew Dickinson was 8th, Ciaran Lewis 20th and Mark Jones 22nd.
The senior women’s race was led by two Ethiopians and Steph Twell, setting a fast pace from the outset.
Ffion Price finished 24th, Kate Roberts 28th and Katie Parry 30th. Unfortunately Alaw Beynon-Thomas became unwell during the race and was unable to finish.
The senior men’s race was also a fast race, led by Olympians Thomas Ayeko and Edwin Sol. Owain Jones was 17th, Chris Carpanini 28th and Josh Griffiths 34th.
This brings to an end a long cross country season (apart from the World Cross), these athletes will now be looking forward to race on different surfaces.
They were a pleasure to team manage – well done to each of them.
