South Wales took overall victory during an excellent day’s racing at the Welsh Inter-Regional Cross Country Championships.
There were some excellent performances in the younger age groups with Kate Seary (17:49), pictured below, taking a superb win in the under 17 girls race and Annwen Gammon (10:43) leading an all-South top four in the under 13 girls race.
Claire Beatty (22:27) was the South’s other winner on the day, taking the MW35 race. The course at Builth Wells Royal Welsh Showground proved to be as tough as ever for the hundreds of athletes who made their way to mid-Wales on Saturday morning.
In the senior men’s race the absence of Great Britain internationals Dewi Griffiths and Charlie Hulson left the field wide open and it was the North’s Andrew Davies (36:03), pictured below, who took advantage, using his vast mountain running experience to take the win on a hilly course.
There was an excellent performance from 20-year-old Josh Griffiths (West – 36:22) to take second with Jon Hopkins (South – 37:11) in third.
Andrea Whitcombe and Jessica Parry Williams battled for supremacy once again in the senior women’s race and it was current Welsh Cross Country champion Whitcombe who took the win for the West in 24:47 with Parry-Williams (West) second in 25:25.
Jac Hopkins (West – 21:43) made an impressive return to form on his debut in the under 20 men’s race, stretching out a sizable winning margin from Mike Ward (South – 22:21) and Nathan Jones (North – 22:41).
Ffion Price lived up to her billing as hot favourite for the Junior Women’s race, taking the victory for the East (20:36) but she was pushed all the way by Georgia Garner (North – 20:54) with Rebecca Evans (South – 21:28) narrowly behind the leading pair.
Elsewhere in the junior races Iolo Hughes (North – 18:35) continued his excellent form by taking the under 17 men’s race, fellow North athlete Christian Smith (14:23) won the under 15 boys’ and Luke Davies (East – 9:29) the under 13 boys.
Iolo’s younger sister Cari Hughes, pictured above, made it a great day for the family by winning the under 15 girls’ race (12:42) by almost a minute from her nearest rival Jessica Bradley (West – 13:37).
