Saturday 28th November, saw the staging of the first ever Welsh Athletics Clubs Conference which has been hailed as an unprecedented success. The conference was attended by over 50 delegates from 22 different athletics and running clubs from across Wales and covered a number of interesting and thought provoking topics.
The event was opened by Welsh Athletics Chair, Carol Anthony, before a number of inspirational presenters took to the stage.
Opening the day was Mike Lynch from GB Sport (one of the leading agencies in the UK for business skills in sport providing expert training and support to clubs) with a session titled ‘Is Your Club Fit for Purpose’ questioning current activities and sharing best practice. Alison Pritchard from Cardiff Third Sector Council (who provide specialist advice, support, and information to voluntary and third sector organisations) led sessions covering; Legal Structure and Status, Roles and Responsibilities of Club Officers and correct Club Policies, Procedures and Actions.
A popular feature in the timetable were the two club presentations / workshop sessions delivered by Lliswerry Runners (Chris Davies) and Cardiff AAC (Hannah Pretty and Danielle Mill) both of whom presented real life case studies of good practice.
The afternoon session was kicked off, once again by Mike Lynch (GB Sport) with an interactive session, focussing on best practice, for clubs contemplating payments and financial transactions. The day was concluded with an excellent session from Josh Hoole of the Digital Development Company (a company which, for over 14 years, has been helping to build capacity within voluntary to create and deliver strategic Digital Development projects) challenging clubs on their ability to engage via digital media and providing practical tools and solutions for clubs to use moving forward.
