The building blocks of the organisation include strategic and operational plans which are continuously evolving to accommodate the changing demands on national governing bodies of sport in the UK.
Welsh Athletics works on four-year cycles, therefore the current strategic plan covers the period from April 2009 to March 2013.
The Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) strategy “Climbing Higher – a vision for 2023” sets out a number of targets which have influenced the direction of Welsh Athletics. More recently, the WAG document, “An Active Wales”, has reinforced the role that sport plays in the health of the nation. Similarly, the joined-up working with UKA and the other Home Nations has created an environment for consistent delivery across the UK.
Against this context, the bottom-up planning of the Regional Athletics Councils, the Welsh Schools Athletic Association, the various Committees and the staff team has also shaped the overall direction of the organisation. The result is a three tier plan.
Level 1 describes the broad aims of the organisation within the four-year term of the strategic plan. Level 2 describes the specific activities for the next year and represents the operational plan. Level 3 describes the specific work programmes of the staff team which contribute to the delivery of the strategic and operational objectives.
We have also developed a series of key performance indicators which are set and then reviewed as part of our annual cycle. An extensive mid-year SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) also shapes the direction of the following year’s operational plan to promote a constant cycle of review and improvement.
